Do you know what a diaper is? A diaper is
a square thing, right? Well, in the field of illumination there is a term called diaper
pattern. In a diaper pattern, or pattern of squares, is another element in illumination.
And so, a pattern of squares at its simplest would be something like this. Now I just,
this happens to be a tee shirt design, which hasn’t actually made its way onto a tee shirt
yet. My thought was that it was very masculine. But this is as simple as it gets, OK. There
you go with black and white, black and white, black and white, but, in illumination, alright,
diaper patterns can get exceedingly elaborate. So, I’ve done a little bit of work here to
show you, this is actually blown up from the original. A diaper pattern is a pattern of
squares that in illuminated manuscripts often becomes exceedingly rich and elaborate. And
there is a process, I would call this a repeat pattern, OK, and there is a process to doing
these. And the process really boils down to the idea that you do all of one thing at once.
So, let’s say you’re going to start out with your basic grid pattern, OK. This is typical.
This is the you know, sort of classic way to have a diaper pattern. And you’re probably
going to be looking to do light, dark, light, dark, light, dark. So, when I say you’re going
to do all of the same thing together, what I mean by that is, let’s say you’re going
to do black, white, black, white, black, white. So, you’re going to mark just so you know
to start confusing yourself because this can get you know, you can, your eyes can start
to go crazy. So, you’re going to mark all the ones that you’re going to do black, OK.
And then, you color them in. And then you have the whites the way they are, so then
you’re going to make a decision about what kind of a thing you’re going to do with the
whites. So let’s say we want, we’re going to make our way into a contrast, so you take
and you put a diamond, a red diamond let’s say, as your idea for the contrast with the
black. So then you go ahead and you put in all the red diamonds. OK.
