Calligraphy Italic Capitals: K-Z : Calligraphy Italic Capitals Height

Calligraphy Italic Capitals: K-Z : Calligraphy Italic Capitals Height

As we’re working on these letters I want to
remind you that they are eight pen widths high. A pen width is determined by the tool
that you’re writing with. Whether you’re using a marker that’s cut with a calligraphy nib
or whether you’re working with a broad nibbed pen, I’m just going to show you how we measure
the proportion of the letters. Each alphabet has its own proportion. For the italic, I’ve
sort of chosen a midrange for the height and that’s eight pen widths. So, if we count these,
one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. You’re going to see that that is the eight
times this particular pen. If you’re using a smaller pen you’re interval will be smaller
and if you’re using a larger pen your interval will be larger. Then, I’m going to fit the
letters within that eighth pen width space. We’ll call that the capital height. So, the
capitals fit in like that and the lower case fits in like this.
