Calligraphy in the Western World : Zen Circles and Spirals in Calligraphy

Zen circles and spirals. This is a Zen circle,
it’s referred to as an Enso and it’s on the back cover of a very interesting book called
“Sacred Calligraphy of the East”. And it’s by someone named John Stevens but guess what
guys, it’s a different John Stevens then I had mentioned earlier. So there’s more than
one great John Stevens out there. Anyway in this book it talks about Ensos. Now as I understand
it an Enso is a Zen circle that has to do with like a kind of concentration. So if you
wanted to do a Zen circle for that, that; that, just that moment of clarity; it’s like
a Zen practice, you would prepare yourself psychologically for it and in if it were a
real Zen guy doing it; he’d have, he’d be sitting and he’d have this piece of rice paper
there and his brush and he’d do it very quickly. The idea’s not to make a perfect circle; the
idea is to make a circle that shows total consciousness o.k. So let me just embarrass
myself by doing one for you just to give you the idea and then you can go ahead and perfect
it o.k.
