Calligraphy in the Western World : Calligraphy in Mandalas

Calligraphy in the Western World : Calligraphy in Mandalas

So we talked about Calligraphing in circles
and I mentioned Tondos which are paintings letter done in a round format, but I also
want to talk about something that I would put under the general category of Mandalas.
So there’s a whole book, if not many books written on Mandalas, some people call it Mandala,
I’m not quite sure which is right, but anyway, this is a whole book on it. And we’ve talked
before about the idea of Triads, well, a Mandala or Mandala is one. And the thing that it has
where it’s a Triad can look like an arrow which points you in a certain direction. A
Mandala or sometimes, would be call a radiance or something, it goes like this, you know,
it radiates out. I got very fascinated with the idea in awhile back, a good while back,
I ended up working on black ground a lot. It was actually a kind of, special kind of
paper that I had made, and I came up with this guide. Now, this very same method that
I showed you with, you know, starting out with a compass is basically, basically what
I did with this. This was, I don’t know how long it took me to do this, I really don’t
know. But what I can do is I can show you a little bit of how I did it. Okay. So, I
started out with a smaller things that I did. I started out with this pen. And of course,
the smart thing to do is to start out with your grid so that you’re always coming into
the center. Say we have five, that little design takes five. So you’re going to turn
it and going to go one, two, three, four, five. And you’re going to turn it and you’re
going to go one, two, three, four, five. And you’re going to turn it again and you’re going
to go one, two, three, four, five. And maybe you’re going to start to go out a little bit
further and you can go one, two, three, four, five. One, two, three, four, five. See how
it’s already starting to do that. One, two, three, four, five.
